General thoughts on Gamehaven

I am curious who is involved from the BSA Gamehaven Council and Hiawatha District to represent the Gamehave Scout Reservation.
I know Jeff Robertson is involved in both groups (as am I), but do we have an official BSA representative?.
For the record,  I am an enthusiastic supporter of the initiative.  However,  when I brought this up at one of the Troop meetings where I'm an Assistant Scoutmaster, I was surprised that several adults were cautious to the point of being negative on the proposal.  They brought up concerns of traffic/parking, safety, liability and noise and physical overlap/intrusion into the scout areas.  Gamehaven scout reservation requires all scouts and adults to be checked in, so how would we account for non-scouters being on the GSR side?  I would like to be a proponent of the park with the scouts (I have one Eagle Scout and two more on the way), but need to know were we stand.

I believe the concerns above  are all surmountable and can be addressed with proper planning, procedures and signage.  This park will be a great asset to BSA, RASC and DMC. Let's be sure we think through possible issues and get the cooperation of BSA to have an answer to nay-sayers.

As we were developing our proposal to build mountain bike trails at Gamehaven we worked very closely with K C Reed, VP Program – Executive Board who is our interface to the Gamehaven Council.

Our goal  is to build a strong relationship between RASC and the Scouts and working together on projects and activities that will benefit the Scouts.  This will be a continuing process as we develop new ideas.  One of our initial thoughts where we can work together is having experienced RASC mountain bike riders provide skills training for Scouts with an interest in mountain biking. The Scouts are acquiring mountain bikes to do this.

We are participating with individual Scouts in their pursuit of the Eagle badges by providing meaningful projects. We have completed two – one at Quarry Hill and one at Gamehaven. We are working this summer on another one at Gamehaven.

We are very conscious of the concerns you mentioned - especially physical overlap/intrusion into the scout areas.  The proposed trails meander on both City and Scout property around the lake.

If there is a Scouting event where it is preferable to limit entry into the Scout reservation the Scout Camp Operations Manager – Dustin Olson – will close the trails on Scout property.

Our trail crews are also instructed to advise Dusty when they are planning to work on trails so that any conflicts can be avoided.

It will be important to have continued communications and address any potential conflicts as we move forward with the larger Park plans.

    Jeff

2015 should be a good year for the Gamehaven project as we end 2014 with approval from all the key city and county boards that oversee the park, to proceed with our plans for a winter / summer park.

Has there been any thought on adding a Fitness Park area to Gamehaven? Here is an example of what I am referring to: http://fitness.playcore.com/

This could pair well with the Children's nature based play area and encourage adults to keep moving as they get older so they can keep up with their children. I would love to see something like this in Rochester. I believe Mankato has one in Sibley Park.

    Thank you.

I can't agree more! Community exercise parks are a great place for adults to engage in exercise while enjoying the outdoors!

Very glad to see Disc golf is included in this. It's definitely a growing sport and one that people travel for. My wife and I make it a point to stop at disc golf courses on our way when we travel to places for other things and even drive an hour or two out of our way to go to them. We also frequently take trips specifically to visit disc golf courses within a few hours of here such as Morristown, Red Wing, Stewartville, St. Charles, Winona, Eau Claire (WI), the Twin Cities area, Austin, La Crosse (WI), River Falls (WI), etc.

Do we have any idea of how the quest for funding the $14 Million is going and a timeline on this project? Are there any more meetings or open houses to discuss it and look for funding opportunities?
